The Book and the Author:
James Allen was born in Leicester, England in 1864. In 1879 his father left for America in an effort to recoup financial losses. The elder Allen had hoped to settle in the United States, but was robbed and murdered before he could send for his family. The financial crisis that resulted forced James to leave school at fifteen and begin work as a personal secretary for an executive of a large corporation until 1902. At the age of 38 he resigned from his prior work to begin writing and moved with his wife to a small cottage at Ilfracombe, England. There he wrote more than 20 books in the 10 years prior to his death in 1912.
He is credited by some as being the progenitor of the personal growth movement and has influenced many of today's leaders in the field including Norman Vincent Peale, Earl Nightingale, Denis Waitley, Tony Robbins and Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the Chicken Soup books.
